Relive the Glory Days on vNES

Forget those old NES downloadable emulators. There’s a new way to enjoy all that 8-bit glory from your childhood. It’s all online (no downloading required) and, of course, it’s also free. Check out vNES!

vNES is a “Nintendo Entertainment System emulator programmed in Java, allowing for cross-platform online use in a browser, preferably Mozilla Firefox. To use vNES, you’ll need any computer with 192 MB of RAM and a Pentium 3 (or equivalent).” vNES utilizes the Java Sound API to produce clear sounds that match those of the original console. As of March 23rd 2007, vNES hosts 500 games in English, 250 in Japanes, and 50 in other languages.

Launched in early October of 2006, vNES was posted at Digg and became an instant success, averaging several thousand hits a day. vNES had a rocky beginning; shut down only a month after going public due to emulation legality, the site eventually came through under the ruling that, although downloading emulations (or ROMs) is seen as piracy, online emulation (which does not involve downloading) is not. Find out more about emulation legality here. After a few server switches and downtime, vNES is now currently going strong. There is even rumors of a new user interface, dubbed “vNES UI 3.0” under development, and scheduled for release in May 2007.
